Hypoxic - In The Grips Of A Swamp

by Traumatic

Hot on the heels of “Dissociate”– which received rave reviews all over the place – Australian producer Hypoxic delivers his sophomore album.
Gaining serious premature praise on social media, where it was deemed a “potential hardcore album of the year”, can “In The Grips Of A Swamp” live up to that? Well, surely not if you suffer from a short attention span, but it definitely will resonate big time with those who appreciate some serious depth.

The eight tracks on this album pursue a climactic structure, from atmospheric slowcore tracks exploring texture and timbre (rather than rhythmic onslaught), over some techno-ish swagger to heavy duty club artillery, the peak being the collaboration track with Ascend (the Into The Darklands in-house DJ’s first appearance as a producer). And while this general outline may be similar to that of the debut, the musical content is actually quite different, fathoming the extremes of the experimental and the appealing equally:

Plunge into the heavily treated blackness of “Mind Sludge”, out of which rises a martial drumbeat, shiver to the abyss of drones that is “Deluge” and shake to the psyched out repetitive rhythms of “Shackled” and “The Mire”. From there, the punters are called into action, with the upfront distorted techno beats of “Creep” and “Corrupt” and the more –core structure of “Internal Fog” and the glorious stop-and-go kick drum finale that is “Damned”. 45 minutes will have never felt quite that short!
